Offer Description

We are currently seeking highly motivated and proactive Research Fellow to join our dynamic research group, under the supervision of Professor Palermo.

Vincenzo Palermo serves as the director of the CNR Institute for Organic Synthesis and Photoreactivity (ISOF) in Bologna, Italy, and is an associated professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. His work revolves around utilizing nanotechnology and supramolecular chemistry to develop innovative materials with applications spanning electronics, aerospace, and biomedicine. With over 200 scientific articles published in prestigious international journals across chemistry, nanotechnology, and materials science, Professor Palermo has a citation count exceeding 11,000 and an h-index of 53. He has established key partnerships with industrial partners in Europe, including Airbus, Stellantis, Leonardo, BASF, Nokia, and STMicroelectronics. Professor Palermo’s leadership extends to coordinating various EU projects, notably serving as vice-director and a member of the executive board of the Graphene Flagship, one of Europe’s most extensive research initiatives. His contributions have been recognized through accolades such as the Lecturer Award for Excellence from the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS), the Research Award from the Italian Society of Chemistry (SCI), and Science Dissemination Awards from the Italian Book Association.

Job location

You will work at ISOF, which is one of the 89 institutes of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) established in 2002.
CNR, the largest public research institution in Italy, is directly managed by the Ministry of Research.
The mission of CNR is to conduct research, promote innovation and competitiveness, internationalize the national research system, provide technologies and solutions, and advise the government and other public bodies on scientific matters.

ISOF  has >7000 m2 of laboratories equipped with  state-of-the-art instrumentation. At ISOF you shall find all key facilities for synthetic chemistry, spectroscopy and characterization of materials, cellular and molecular biology.

Instrumentation available includes more than 60 chemical hoods for synthesis, state-of-the-art NMR, optical and scanning probe microscopy, ICP Mass Spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, UV-VIS-NIR Spectrofluorimetry, Femtosecond laser spectroscopy, biological labs etc.

ISOF typically owns around 40 research projects per year, funded by the EU, the Italian government, the Emilia Romagna Region, and various non-profit organizations and industrial partners.

Eligibility criteria

A) You own a degree in STEM disciplinary or the Specialist/Master’s Degree, with a professional curriculum suitable for carrying out research activities;

B) You have good experience in processing graphene and/or graphene e oxide derivatives in solution and on surfaces, and their characterization.

  • Good knowledge of electrochemistry is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of use of AI for data analysis, in particular machine learning, is preferred.

C) You have a good knowledge of English written and spoken language.

For the purposes of the candidate’s admission to this selection procedure, all qualifications obtained abroad (degree, doctorate and any other qualifications) shall be previously assessed and validated by the selection board. Once the candidate has been selected, the equivalence of the aforementioned qualifications obtained abroad will be recognised in Italy in accordance with the relevant legislation in force (information at this link on the website of the Ministry of Universities and Scientific Research).

Skills/Qualifications

This is a strongly interdisciplinary project, and we welcome applications from candidates holding a PhD or a master degree in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Materials Science, Computer Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics. Fresh graduates with a desire to embark on their research journey and the ability to join our group promptly are encouraged to apply.

As a Research Fellow, you will be responsible for managing laboratory activities, overseeing small-scale project management, and coordinating various tasks to meet project deadlines. Active participation in group meetings, generation of high-quality figures and drafts for publication, and representation of the research group at external meetings and seminars are also key aspects of the role.

ISOF team will support the selected candidate in this procedure.

Contract Terms, Salary and accommodation in Bologna

This position is a full-time temporary employment for one year, renewable for multiple years.

Selected candidates can expect a net starting salary of approximately €17,000 per year, which can increase to over €19,000 per year for experienced fellows.

Bologna, located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy, is the seventh most populous city in Italy with a population of about 400,000 people from 150 different nationalities. Its metropolitan area is home to over 1,000,000 people. Bologna is renowned for its rich cuisine, earning it the nickname ‘Fat City,’ and its red tiled rooftops, earning it the nickname ‘Red City.’ Bologna is undoubtedly the ‘wise city’ as it proudly houses the oldest university in the world. Its historic center, spanning 142 hectares, boasts an abundance of medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque artistic treasures.

Moreover, the region is famously known as the ‘motor valley’ and is home to renowned producers of sports cars and bikes such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Ducati, and Aprilia.

Bologna is home to a very large university, and also an international tourist attraction. For this reason, housing accommodation needs to be planned well in advance for new employees.

The secretary will assist successful candidates with the administrative process, including visa and settlement procedures.
