NANOCHEMISTRY LAB

The NANOCHEMISTRY LAB is a group of researchers dedicated to the study of new materials using weak chemical forces such as Van der Waals interactions, Hydrogen Bonds, Electrostatic forces, hydrophobicity, etc.
These interactions are the same ones ruling the activity and structure of proteins and cell membranes, and allow to self-assemble small molecules and nanometric objects into complex architectures, using the principles of Supramolecular chemistry.

The Lab, led by Vincenzo Palermo, is part of CNR MAFO research unit.

We have know-how and experience in different techniques used to self-assemble materials and to study their properties at the nanoscale. Main expertizes are:

  • Atomic force Microscopy (AFM), to visualize material's morphology at the nanoscale.
  • Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), to visualize single molecules and atoms at surfaces.
  • Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM), to measure electric potential and work function of nanostructures.
  • Preparation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMS) on different substrates, to change their chemical and electrical properties.
  • Temperature enhanced solvent vapour annealing (TESVA), for large scale growth of molecular crystals.
  • Development of innovative methods in solution processing of organic molecular and polymeric materials.

Our ultimate goal is to understand and control how small organic molecules interact with each other to form highly ordered nanostructures, to create new materials with innovative properties.
