We are delighted to announce our participation in a project under the European Defence Fund (EDF). The project, titled Sustainable Water Innovations for Fielded Troops (S.W.I.F.T), is comprised of a European consortium of partners from Belgium, Germany Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and it is led by Ethnicon Metsovion Polytechnion (Greece). The project will last for 42 months and the European Union has invested close to €4 million in the project. In the scope of our work on defence, the project will not only address the importance of operational autonomy for Europe, but it could lead to innovations on dual-use technologies.
The project will lead to cross-border defence cooperation in Europe to develop a novel and extensive approach to water management for modular field camps that are deployed in expeditionary and European defence contexts. Specifically, the project will concentrate on exploring the potential of emerging water reuse concepts and technologies to provide clean and safe water for military personnel in various (often harsh) operational environments. The project will also address the issue of energy demands for these novel technologies, identifying opportunities to optimally couple water and energy systems, enabling demand-side management capabilities, thus resulting to increased efficiency and resilience for both.
ISOF’ role in the project is the development of graphene based technologies for water treatment and their validation in integrated multistep systems.
