The Graphene Flagship was one of the most ambitious and impactful research projects ever funded by the European Commission to transition graphene and related 2D materials from academic laboratories into European society, stimulating economic growth, creating new jobs, and securing Europe’s strategic autonomy in these technologies. It generated a remarkable return on investment, both in terms of scientific excellence and economic value, according to an independent economic impact report commissioned by the EC. This study estimates that the Graphene Flagship will have contributed about € 3,800 million to the EU27 economy and € 5,900 million to the global economy by 2030. The project also fostered innovation and entrepreneurship, resulting in 83 patents, over 5000 publications with almost 300.000 citations, and 18 spin-off companies that raised €140 million in private funding.
