The article " Dispersibility-Dependent Biodegradation of Graphene Oxide by Myeloperoxidase"

Abstract:
Understanding human health risk associated with the rapidly emerging graphene-based nanomaterials represents a great challenge because of the diversity of applications and the wide range of possible ways of exposure to this type of materials. Herein, the biodegradation of graphene oxide (GO) sheets is reported by using myeloperoxidase (hMPO) derived from human neutrophils in the presence of a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The degradation capability of the enzyme on three different GO samples containing different degree of oxidation on their graphenic lattice, leading to a variable dispersibility in aqueous media is compared. hMPO fails in degrading the most aggregated GO, but succeeds to completely metabolize highly dispersed GO samples. The spectroscopy and microscopy analyses provide unambiguous evidence for the key roles played by hydrophilicity, negative surface charge, and colloidal stability of the aqueous GO in their biodegradation by hMPO catalysis.

Premio alla ricerca assegnato dalla società chimica italiana a ricercatore ISOF
Il Consiglio Direttivo della Divisione di Chimica Organica ha assegnato a Vincenzo Palermo, ricercatore CNR, il Premio alla Ricerca in Chimica Organica nei suoi aspetti meccanicistici e teorici, quale riconoscimento dei brillanti risultati ottenuti nell'ambito delle sue ricerche su materiali organici funzionali per applicazioni optoelettroniche e fotovoltaiche usando grafene e molecole in grado di auto-assemblarsi. Il premio è assegnato da parte della Divisione, assieme ad altri, ogni anno ad uno scienziato che si è particolarmente distinto in un settore emergente della Chimica. Il dott. Palermo è il primo ricercatore CNR a vincere questo particolare premio, in precedenza assegnato sempre a docenti universitari.
Il premio è stato assegnato il 13 settembre durante il 35° Convegno Nazionale della Divisione di Chimica Organica della Società Chimica Italiana, organizzato congiuntamente dal Dipartimento di Chimica e Farmacia e dall'Istituto di Chimica Biomolecolare del CNR- Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.
