On Thursday, 8 October, at 2:00 p.m., the Dario Nobili Library at the CNR Research Area in Bologna will host the workshop “The CNR Binishell: a Heritage between Research and Architecture”, promoted by the Institute of Organic Synthesis and Photoreactivity (CNR-ISOF), with the participation of CHrossLab, the distributed laboratory of the CNR Department of Chemical Sciences and Technologies of Materials (DSCTM).
The initiative aims to open a shared discussion on the future of the CNR Binishell at Fossatone di Medicina, a structure representing a rare example of the integration of scientific research, technological innovation and architectural experimentation. The site tells an important story in the history of Italian research and today offers an opportunity to reflect on its potential future uses.
Built in the early 1970s according to the revolutionary construction system developed by architect Dante Bini, the Fossatone structure is one of the first Binishells ever built. Its uniqueness lies not only in its architectural value, as an outstanding example of innovative construction, but also in the function for which it was conceived. Unlike most other Binishells, which were designed for residential, industrial or public uses, the Fossatone structure was specifically designed to house a major scientific facility, giving it a unique significance in the international context.
The building housed the electron linear accelerator (LINAC), formerly FRAE and now part of ISOF, which was installed in 1970 for research into pulsed radiolysis, radiation chemistry, materials, environmental and biological studies, as well as industrial applications.
Although currently unused, the site retains significant historical, scientific and architectural value and offers interesting potential for future recovery, adaptive reuse and valorisation initiatives. The workshop therefore seeks to open a discussion on the meaning, memory and possible future perspectives of this unique site.
The event will feature the special participation of Architect Dante Bini, creator of the Binishell construction system; Professor Carlo Dusi of Università della Svizzera Italiana, one of the leading experts on Binishells; Architect Silvana Pirelli, Head of the CNR Building Heritage Office; and Matteo Montanari, Mayor of the Municipality of Medicina.
