Carla Ferreri was born in Napoli. She is graduated in Medicinal Chemistry in 1979 and post-graduated in Hospital Pharmacy in 1981, but her passion for organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry brought her first abroad in San Diego, California, for a collaboration with Prof. E. Wenkert’s group, and then from 1894 in the Organic Chemistry Department of the University of Napoli, where she was appointed as permanent research fellow. From 1990 she started the collaboration with Dr. C. Chatgilialoglu in the field of free radical chemistry, and from 2001 she moved to the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Bologna, where she is now Senior Researcher, responsible of the project “Biomarker of Free Radical Stress” in the CNR Research Area of Bologna.
Her research interests deal with the field of free radicals, studying either the chimica transformations under biomimetic conditions (liposomes), and the applications to new biomarkers related to free radical stress, and the consequences of various types of stress to cell membrane.
In the field of lipidomics of cell membrane, Carla Ferreri studied the changes that occur to the fatty acids present in the membrane phospholipids in physiological and pathological conditions. From this research the innovation project derived: “LIPIDOMIC PROFILE of CELL MEMBRANES: A MOLECULAR APPROACH applied to HUMAN HEALTH” which has a wide applicability for medicine and improvement of life quality. For this project Carla Ferreri has been awarded in 2010 with the ITWIIN award as the BEST INNOVATOR WOMAN in ITALY and she will be proposed for the EUWIIN award 2011.
Carla Ferreri is co-founder and R&D directors of the company Lipinutragen, spin-off of the at the Research Area of Bologna. She implemented with the company the field of NUTRILIPIDOMICS, that is the study of nutraceutical formulations or functional foods able to reach cell membrane, recovering the natural composition depending on the individual chealth conditions. The first project of nutrilipidomics has been create in the field of dermatology (see: www.lipinutragen.it e www.nutrilipidomica.it for further information).
